Misguided Pushback Against Greta van Susteren for the “Dumb” Poll? | May 30, 2010

Okay, the first moral of the story: Don’t ask a question you don’t want to hear the answer to. Second moral of the story: Don’t ask a question you don’t want to hear the answer to.

That being said, sometimes things just go crazy. The Greta van Susteren thing is a good example of people making a mountain out of a molehill. You won’t find me often defending anybody on Fox, but I gotta say, with oil spewing into the ocean, the economy still not a pretty picture, the right-wing, racist-driven tea party taking over what’s left of the Republican Party, Civil Rights opponent Rand Paul winning the primary, there’s gotta be something more important to talk about than a silly little poll Greta van Susteren put up on her blog site, gretawire. The story is that some guy named Brian called her dumb in an e-mail. van Susteren then did a Palin — couldn’t let sleeping dogs lie — and ran a cocky little poll asking people to rate her intelligence. Boom, done — 67% said she’s dumber than the guy who thinks she’s dumb, 22% think the guy who thinks she’s dumb is dumber. Sounds to me like a classic case of Dumb and Dumber.

Should van Susteren have posted the poll? Hell, no. She’s a skilled journalist, an attorney — what was she thinking? She’s been hanging around Palin (her husband happens to be one of Palin’s advisors) — whose thin skin won’t allow her to let any criticism roll off without posting on Facebook or Twittering — way too long, it appears. Of course, the liberal media ran wild with the story . . . it’s good fodder, probably would have used it myself if it hadn’t just bored me, and if I hadn’t thought it was just silly.

So, let’s get to the nuts and bolts of this. Some guy called van Susteren dumb — he’s entitled to his opinion. Posting that poll was a clear misstep. But the bottom line is, Greta van Susteren isn’t dumb. So what if 67% of those polled think she is? Who knows who weighed in? Let’s keep in mind that, on the one hand, Fox viewers (if that’s who answered the poll) are among the most misinformed of all viewers of cable news (and they probably don’t like van Susteren anyway, ’cause she’s the “liberal” one). If the poll were hijacked by libs (and no, I didn’t vote), it makes the whole thing more ridiculous. I don’t take the validity of that poll any more seriously than I do a poll by right-winger Frank Luntz.

van Susteren earned an undergrad degree at the University of Wisconsin, and graduated from Georgetown Law School. She has pretty heavy journalistic creds, though they’re not often displayed on the GOP-driven Fox News Channel. She may have left her more liberal idealogical bent behind when she joined the right-wing outfit we know as Fox and started drinking the Fox Kool-Aid, but that doesn’t make her dumb — hypocritical and ambitious, maybe, but not necessarily dumb.

As a dyed-in-the-wool uber-lib, I say, let this one go. Talk about Palin, talk about Rand Paul, talk about the obstructionist GOP, talk about the goofy right criticizing President Obama for attending a Memorial Day ceremony in Chicago instead of Arlington . . . but any more conversation about this poll is just dumbin’ everybody down.
